The new Recon Tanto in San Mai® is a solid knife with unique features for sec. It was Cold Steel who designed and popularized the "American Tanto" blade in the early 1990s. Compared to its Japanese predecessor, the American Tanto has a reinforced secondary blade to prevent damage when chopping harder materials. The Recon Tanto has applications in military and police forces around the world. In the last 20 years, the Recon Tanto has been involved in many war conflicts as part of the equipment of the intervening forces. Our blades, made with San Mai III technology, have been the domain of Cold Steel for decades. San Mai III technology is based on the practices of Japanese sword makers. It's a sandwich blade construction of layers of different hardness. While the middle layer is hard steel with a high carbon content, the top two layers are made of a much tougher steel to prevent the middle layer from cracking. This makes the blade maximally resistant to loss of edge without the risk of breakage. But these luxury blades are only produced in limited numbers. The VG-10 steel that is used to make this blade is a high carbon stainless steel. The perfectly shaped Kraton (Long Kray-Ex™) knife handle offers a non-slip surface. It fits perfectly in the hand and allows even very delicate knife handling in wet and muddy environments. The knife comes with a Secure-Ex® sheath.
